Here we present our contestants. Some of them arrived from countries not associated with winter and ice.

Victor Dagatan
 

Victor Dagatan

Born in the Philippines, and living in the USA. He works at the Ritz Cartlon Hotel as pastry chef and ice sculptor. He is also a member of the Food Artist Group. A participant of international contests, and the winner of multiple awards. Double winner of the Ice Sculpture Festival in Poznań, 3-time winner of the Ice Magic Festival in Canada, runner up in the Ice Cultural Festival.

 

Angelito Baban
 

Angelito Baban

Born in the USA, he is an employee of the JW Marriott hotel in Washington D.C., where he works as an "avant-garde" chef. In 2011, he won 1st place in the Ice Sculpture Festival in Poznań. In 2013, he won that competition again. In 2014 he won the World Ice Competiton in Alaska, and in 2012, the competition in Vermont. Apart from ice sculpting, he is also a fruit sculptor. In 2002, he won first place in the chocolate sculpting competition, and received his ice sculpting certificate.

 

Yoshihito Kosaka
 

Yoshihito Kosaka

Runner up in the 2010 ice sculpting world championships. He won the first place at the International Ice Sculpture Festival in Finland in 2013. He won this year's edition of the Tatry Ice Master. In 2004, he took part in the Ice Art World Championships in Japan, where he came in 2nd place, and third in both 2014 and 2015 editions. In 2015 he won the Ice Art Championships in Tokyo.

 

 

Shimon Sato

In 2004, he took part in the Ice Art World Championships in Japan, where he came in 2nd place. In the 2014 and 2015 editions, he placed third. In 2015 he won the Ice Art Championships in Tokyo.

 

Kevin Ashe
Kevin Ashe

Born in Canada, he has been a member of the Canadian Ice Carvers Society for 11 years. He was born and raised in Ottawa. In 2009, teaming up with Suguru Kanabayashi, he came 3rd in the Crystal Garden International Ice Carving Competition, and 3rd in the Poznań International Ice Sculpture Festival in 2009, 2010 and 2013. In 2010, he represented Canada at the winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. For 12 years now he has been taking part in international ice carving competitions. He has been continuously taking part in Poznań competitions for the past 9 years.

 

Suguru Kanbayashi
 

Suguru Kanbayashi

Participated in many international competitions e.g. in Fairbanks Alaska, the Ottawa Winterlude, Matsumoto Japan, Edmonton Ice on Whyte, the Vancouver 2010 Olimpic Ice Art, the Ice Magic Banff, and in Poznań competitions, winning many prizes, honourable mentions and championships. Ice Sculptures have for years been his passion.

Suguru is one of the key organizers of the international Ottawa Winterlude. - i.e. the Canadian winter festival, celebrated by thousands of people.

For 15 years, he has been an active member of the Canadian Ice Carvers' Society, which is responsible for organizing one of the most popular ice sculpture festivals, namely the Crystal Garden International Ice Carving Competition.

Piotr Boroń
 
 

Piotr Boroń

A sculptor, graduate of the Faculty of Sculptures at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. A participant of numerous sculpting and ceramic symposiums both in Poland and abroad. Designer and creator of large spatial forms, bas-reliefs, statuettes and medallic forms. In his projects, he uses metal (bronze, brass), wood, stone, ceramics, resins. Currently employed at the Art School in Gdynia Orłowo as a teacher of metalwork, ceramics, and sculpting techniques. He is a laureate of numerous contests, i.a., the Polish National Wood Carving Competition – Zakopane 1998 (2nd place), Forest Spaces – Gdańsk 2004 (1st place). He took part in many exhibitions, i.a.: Young Scupltures of Gdańsk – ZAR Gallery (Gdańsk, 2004), Amberif - Art Gallery 2005, Youth Spring – Refectory Gallery (Kartuzy, 2005) and on location: in Graannat (France), Goleniów (Poland), Handesleben (Germany), painting in Jakubów and metal casting in Gdańsk.

Marek Szewczyk

A sculptor, participant of international symposiums in Poland and abroad. Faculty member of the Higher Technical School in Katowice. Graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, author of the "H20" open-air - a project, which was a part of the sculptors' symposium in the Centre of Polish Sculpture in Orońsko.

Petri Raikuola

A 44 year old Swedish sculptor. He describes himself as only having started to learn of the world of sculpture. He works with Kee Gawahem, his mentor. It is his third time entering the Poznań competition.

Kee Gawah

Coming from Malaysia, a participant in various ice carving competitions in Canada, London, Singapore and Poland. It is his third time entering the Poznań competition.

 

Antonio Baisas
 
 

Antonio Baisas

Born in the Philippines, lives and works in Canada, where he is the decorator at the Casino du Lac-Leamy Gatineau and the Hilton du lac Leamy. His occupation is centred around ice carving, creating sculptures and decorations from fruit, vegetables and many other things.

Between 1990 and 1996 he worked as a kitchen artist at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Manila – the capital of the Philippines. He took part in various ice sculpture, snow sculpture and sand sculpture competitions. Together with his brother Ross they took 2nd place in the Ottawa Winterlude in 2013, where they represented the Philippines.

Ross Baisas
 
 

Ross Baisas

Born and raised in the Philippines in a sculpting family. His hometown of Paete, is considered the country's sculpture central. Currently he is employed at the Casino de Montreal. He often cooperates with his brother Antonio, with whom he won the 2nd place in the Ottawa Winterlude in 2013. He is also a kitchen artist. A veteran of ice carving, improving his works for over a decade now.

 

Michał Mizuła
 
 

Michał Mizuła

He is part of the Poznan Ice Team. A few time medallist of international competitions and festivals - 1st in the International Ice and Snow Carving Competition in Valloire in 2006, and 1st at the Ice Sculpture Festival in Ottawa in 2010. He is also a successful snow carver - won 2nd place in the Valloire competition. A few times, he took part in the World Ice Art Championships in Alaska, to finally stand on the podium in 2010 - his team placed second. They also hold the Guinness World Record for the tallest ice sculpture (Dubai, 2006).

In 2010 and 2011 he came in second at the Wrold Ice Carving Championships. He took part in the 2014 Ice Sculpture Festival in Poznań, where he came in 1st in the Speed Ice Carving competition and 2nd in the main event. 

 

Samuel Girault
 
 

Samuel Girault

A professional sculptor of 10 years. He won multiple events: French Championships in 1999, 2007, 2008 and 2012 Ice Sculpture Festival in Poznań, in 2009 he won the international championships in Ottawa. In 2006 he broke the world record, creating the tallest ice sculpture, 12.28 metres tall.

Włodzimierz Bludnik

Born in the Belarus, he studied at the University of Arts in Poznań in the years 1992-1998. He has been sculpting in ice and sand since 2002. He partook in numerous festivals and competitions across Europe.

 

Martin DeZoete
 
 

Martin DeZoete

Helms his own sculpting company in Switzerland, involved mainly with ice carving; a student of architecture. He organizes many exhibitions for professionals, connected with sand sculpting. His background in architecture serves as an inspiration for his ice, snow and sand creations. His sand sculpting adventure began in 1999 during the International Sand Sculpting Festival in Scheveningen (the Netherlands). He won the European Championship in sand sculpting in Italy, as well as the 2004 World Championships in Harrison Hot Springs in Canada. 

 

Don Lowing
 
 

Don Lowing

Initially studied to become a chef, however, his last 22 years have been devoted to master the art of ice carving. In his works he also uses other materials such as wood or metal. Don is a graduate of the culinary arts and BFA of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. His sculpture installations are exhibited across the United States, Alaska, Canada, South America, and Europe. He is also a laureate of numerous awards and a participant of ice carving contests.

Jess Parish

Aged 35, lives in Longmont, USA. The owner of Cool Hand Ice Carving. A professional sculptor of 8 years. Works mainly in ice and snow, although is not restricted to only those two materials. Other materials include: wood, stone, clay, chalk, paint, sand, fruit, and vegetables.

 
 

Bogdan Stawowy

Represents Ice Evolution, which designs and manufactures ice sculptures for small-scale celebrations, large events and advertising campaigns. Working in blocks of 100/50/25 cm, they carve single sculptures, as well as large structures e.g. impressive ice bars.

Bruno Fleurit
 
 

Bruno Fleurit

Born and raised in La Rochelle, living in Catalonia, Spain, Bruno is a self-taught sculptor. He took part in numerous international symposiums in Switzerland and France. He also represented France at the Ice Festival in London in: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014, as well in the 2009 competition in Hokkaido, Japan. He also works in stone and wood. He is also a painter.
