Archaeological Reserve The Early Piast Dynasty Stronghold Ostrów Lednicki
Only on Ostrów Lednicki (Historical Monument), you can stand next to the baptismal fonts, where it is likely that Mieszko I was baptized in 966, imagine the X-century ducal palace, where the first Polish king was running as a child, and later hosted Otto III and the royal elite of the then Europe.
Ruins of the palace and the chapel, as well as other places on this beautiful island on Lednica lake can be visited with a guide. Undoubtedly, religious art with extreme value of European scale, such as ‘staurotheke’, the reliquary of the True Cross, the liturgical ivory comb and a pilgrim shell of St. James, was found here. Today one of the main attractions is the ferry-crossing.
It is worth beginning your visit to Ostrów Lednicki at the exhibition hall. The permanent exhibition there – recognised in 2011 as the best archaeological exhibition in Poland – perfectly introduces the atmosphere of the island.
